Week 18

Holaaa!!!!!

Well this was my first week with my new companion and also my first week out of training! My companion's name is Hermana McConkie. She's from Vernal, Utah and has red hair! She's super cute and a great missionary, she's been on her mission for a year now. So it's fun.

Life is good here in Palma! We've been CRAZY busy this week. We've had visit after visit after visit with people and it's been amazing to see how many people just kinda pop up when my companion came here. It was kinda a testimony builder to me that we are called to specific places for a specific reason to help the people here. And there are people who are prepared and ready to hear from me and Hermana McConkie specifically. So how fun is that!

So this weekend we had district conference. It's just church but longer haha. It's the same thing as stake conference but we aren't big enough over here to be a stake. But it was fun because President Dayton and H. Dayton came and spoke and Elder Dini Ciacci of the area seventy came and spoke! It was really great and JAN HAAS CAME and LOVED it!!!!!!

So back story on Jan Haas. So earlier this week, Hermana McConkie and I went to KFC and we were just chillin, enjoying our chicken and American fries, and the man sitting at the table next to us (Jan haas) turned to us and was like (in English) "hi, sorry to interrupt, but I've seen missionaries like you before and wondered if you had any information on homeless shelters around here." So apparently he's from Colombia and has only been in Palma for about a month and came here and felt really bad for all the homeless people that he sees everywhere and wants to help them! So we talked to him and explained a little more about what we do as missionaries and such. And then invited him to come to district conference with us! Which he accepted!
And he LOVED it! There was a meeting on Saturday and a meeting on Sunday, and after the Saturday meeting, he was like "I have to come tomorrow when is it and where is it?" And he came! And then afterwords he texted us and was so grateful that we invited him. He told us that the messages really touched him and have made him rethink the course of his life. So we are SO excited about him. We're meeting with him today actually to talk about the restoration of the gospel. Yay for KFC miracles!!!!

So that's really been the highlight of my week. Today for preparation day we went to Valldemosa. It's the CUTEST little old town you've ever seen and it's up kinda high on a mountain. I loved LOVED it. It reminded me of Italy actually which was so fun.

Life is good! I continue to love it! And oh my goodness the SPANISH this week has just flown. I don't know what it is but I can speak Spanish now! I'm at the point where I know I don't speak or understand perfectly, but I have enough confidence in my ability where I have no problem going up to people and talking to them in Spanish. Some accents are harder to understand than others, but at this point I can fluidly carry on a conversation where I am understanding and am understood. So that's fun who knew that'd ever happen! haha

The church is true everyone! Earlier this week we met a cute lady on the street who we're going to visit on Wednesday and as we were talking to her, she was really curious about us as missionaries and what we do and how long we serve and all that. And at one point I told her "we wouldn't do this if we didn't believe so strongly in this gospel." and the spirit confirmed so strongly that YES this is the work of the Lord and I'm bringing people unto Christ! We always say that, but it's real! There really is a church of Jesus Christ on this earth where a true and living prophet receives revelation for God's children just like in Bible times. I love it. Blessings blessings. :)

Well I sure love you all!!!! I hope everyone's enjoying their summer and are planning trips to Spain ;)

Love!

And then Hermana Barlow is still here!!!

Week 17

This week has been the craziest week of my life and this email has the potential to be very long haha but I'll start with the most exciting part...

ALEX OUR GREAT COLOMBIAN MAN WHO WE LOVE GOT BAPTIZED ON SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So here's how it happened because we were not planning on having a baptism last Saturday haha. So on Wednesday we met with him and taught him about the Priesthood. And then we had planned to reset a baptismal date for him to work towards again. So I pulled out my calendar and Hermana Sperry asked him to chose a date that he would like to be baptized on. And he told us he wanted to be baptized that Saturday! So we did it! And it was the MOST beautiful baptism I've ever seen. He went under the water and came back up and just kind of paused, standing there, with his eyes closed, just taking it all in. The spirit was SO strong and it really hit me that Alex, our alcohol drinking, cigarette/weed smoking, women loving hombre was completely clean and washed away from all of that. And he felt it too. He experienced the joy of true repentance and told us that he feels like a new person. It was so beautiful. AND his daughter came! And he told us that he owes a part of his life to the Book of Mormon. It's incredible what that book can do. He is a completely changed man and it is so humbling to hear the things he says and the testimony that he has.

So here's Alex's back story:
Hermana Sperry contacted him on the street, cigarette in hand (his hand), before I got to Palma and had been teaching him for about a month with the companion that she had before me. And then I came to Palma and jumped right in. At that point we were working with him to quit smokig. His biggest trial was understanding the Atonement and understanding how he can feel joy in his life despite the hard things that happen. And then it's just been up and down. We lost him for two weeks, then he came back, then he stopped reading the Book of Mormon, and then we had a REALLY good lesson on the Book of Mormon where we committed him to read that book every day for the rest of his life. That was about 2 weeks ago and since then he has read the Book of Mormon every single day! And he has completely quit smoking! His biggest thing has been that he can tell the difference in his life when he is reading the Book of Mormon and when he isn't and because of that, his testimony is STRONG of that book and then, in turn, of the church. It's incredible!

In other news, we met ANOTHER Bolivian chica named Mariel who is 19 years old! She's the CUTEST I love her already. We've only taught her once so far, but she is also committed to be baptized!!!! So excited for her!

ALSO today is transfer day. So that means my wonderful companion Hermana Sperry, who I love, left this morning to go to Valencia and I am getting my new companion in 30 min! Her name is Hermana McConkie and she has beautiful Ariel red hair! I already love her and have heard AMAZING things about her. She's been on her mission for a year and, so I've heard, is just an incredible missionary. So I'm pumped!

So this week we've been spending A LOT of time with the members over here and all the people who wanted to have us over to say goodbye to Hermana Sperry. It was so cute, Saturday night the branch had a bbq for her and I LOVE Spain because they were all dancing and being cute and loud and loving. These people are just the greatest.
We also went over to Ricardo's house so that he could say goodbye to Hermana Sperry and celebrate his birthday at the same time! It was just a funny time haha he thinks he's hilarious. It was another BBQ so I've been eating well hahah. So yeah that's been us this week!

I continue to love the work! There is NOTHING better in my mind than being a missionary. The growth that I have experienced and the love that I feel for people is just incredible. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone. :) Also read the Book of Mormon!!!!!!

Alright I love you all tons and tons. Hope you're all having the happiest of summers! And I'm so excited for all my mission friends who are all about to leave! Praying for yall!!!!

Love!
